Beddington won by 6 runs.

In this thrilling Surrey Championship Division 1 match, Bedddington made it three wins in a row and are slowly closing the gap with the top 4 clubs. After a pretty appalling batting performance in being out for 99, it was going to take something special for Beddington to get anything out this game and we got something very special indeed from Ryan Cummins, whose 8-44 was almost certainly his finest bowling performance since returning to Beddington after his years in County cricket.

The Beddington innings started badly with Antony Down going early doors, caught in the slips off Satbir Mann.  The next wicket yielded 46 with Lewis dominating the bowling. But Fawad Ahmad, after scratching and scraping around for 41 balls was eventually caught. One can’t help but think that he’s a far better and more dangerous player when he is trying to hit the ball. Beddington reached drinks on 60-2 but soon afterwards Kyle Moolman was LBW sweeping and from there the precession began.  Lewis (35) popped up a simple catch to mid-off. Tom Bevan was caught behind, Parth Vyas, with no luck at all of late, was adjudged caught behind. The rest went down like ninepins and Beddington were all out for 99 before lunch.

After lunch Tom Lancefield came out with guns firing but after hitting a couple of boundaries he gave Tom Bevan the charge and was bowled. From here on in it became the Ryan Cummins show. Only Banstead’s overseas player Gareth Macaskill had any answer to the situation with some hard hitting all around the wicket. However, it was probably Macaskill who, in the end, cost Banstead the game. Any number of times he took a single from a set-back field on the first ball of an over, thus exposing less able batsmen to the wrath of a very fired-up Cummins. On each occasion Cummins duly obliged. With Banstead on 93-8 and Macaskill off strike, Cummins struck twice in successive balls to give Beddington a victory which, at lunchtime, had seemed highly unlikely. Macaskill, unsurprisingly, was left stranded on 56.

This game lasted for only 50 overs. So much for the 11.00 starts.
