Beddington Cricket Club take first win of the season

Sutton v. Beddington on Saturday 4th June 2016
Sutton 72 (30.3 overs) (Cummins 7-30)
Bedddington 75-2 (18.1 overs) (S. Lewis 37 not, A. Down 24 not)
Beddington won by 8 wickets

When Simon Lewis won his fifth consecutive toss, he had no hesitation in asking Sutton to bat first. When the score reached 17, Tom Bevan took the first of his three catches, this one off his own bowling to removed Sutton’s overseas player K, Smith in the 12th over.

Sutton limped along to 23 before Ryan Cummins, short of wickets so far this season, trapped Nicol leg-before. With the score still on 23, Cummins also had Allen LBW and Sutton were now in a bit of trouble and were finding it difficult to get much change out of Cummins. Next to go was the prolific Outram, also LBW to Cummins and when Dan Lewis had Surrey-contracted McKerr brilliantly caught one-handed in the slips by Bevan Sutton were very precariously placed at 56-6.

There was to be no let-up. Cummins bowled both L. Smith and Edwards, Bevan removed Mitchell and Corbett became Cummins’s 7 victim to end a very fine spell of bowling.

Beddington’s innings did not start well. Sam Owen was adjudged to be run out with the score on 6 – he looked to be a tad unlucky. Then only four runs later Dave White was bowled by Mitchell. Anthony Down and Simon Lewis set about restoring the situation slowly but once both had got their eyes in, the runs started to flow quickly.

Down hooked and pulled with much power and Lewis was strong on both sides of the wicket. There was to be no further success for Sutton and after 18 overs Beddington were celebrating their first win of the season.
Next week Beddington are at home to bottom placed East Molesey and will be hoping to build on this week’s performance.
