Borough’s new apprenticeship hub is now launched

Sutton’s new Apprenticeship Hub has today revealed its ‘Careers Live’ platform, a place where local business owners can advertise their apprenticeship opportunities, for young people in the area to see and apply for.

The free-to-use job listings and search portal, which already has 20 apprenticeship opportunities listed, is designed to help Sutton’s small to medium enterprises find local young people who want to get on the career ladder without delay.

The first local apprenticeship search facility

Sutton’s ‘Careers Live’ will be the borough’s first local list and search facility for apprenticeships, and is designed to:

·         Create new career opportunities for Sutton’s 16-24 year olds
·         Enable local businesses to attract the best talent and grow
·         Allow local talent to stay local, whilst reducing commuter costs including travel and accommodation expenses
·         Enable new businesses in the area to tap-in to local young minds and knowledge

Harry Middleton, 21, lives in Carshalton and has recently undertaken a marketing apprenticeship at a local agency in Sutton.  He comments on the launch:

“When I was looking for an apprenticeship in 2013 I applied to over 20 openings all over London and Surrey but the cost of commuting into London every day concerned me.

“When I came across the opening at Sense, located on Throwley Way, I was really excited at the prospect of being able to walk to work. After two years I now have the walk down to a science, so I never have an excuse to be late to work.

“The best thing about working in Sutton is that there is so much potential to excel because Sutton is a growing business hub, right on the doorstep to London. Working in a small, growing business has taught me skills outside of my apprenticeship framework and inspired me to start a business of my own in the future.”

Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of the Housing, Economy and Business Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“Apprentices are great for business and great for the future prospects of our residents. We are lucky to have a range of fantastic schools and colleges full of young, talented people who are looking for a local opportunity to start their career.

“Sutton is leading the way with the only localised apprenticeship jobs board matching businesses with apprentices in the area. Business owners have a great opportunity to source a committed, skilled and dedicated workforce.”

To help smaller businesses take advantage of the increased apprenticeship levy the Apprenticeship Hub will be holding training events in partnership with Business Improvement District (BID) and HR Dept. The training events will cover how and why to hire an apprentice and will take place on Feb 10th and 24th at the Successful Sutton in Times Square. Businesses can book their free place on (Eventbrite link).

In addition to the Careers Live launch, the Apprenticeship Hub also offers businesses and students advice, benefits and inspiration to assist them through the process of employing and finding apprenticeship opportunities.

A Sutton Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on 8th March will focus on National Apprenticeship Week – another great opportunity for businesses to find out more: http://www.suttonchamber.co.uk/national-apprenticeship-week-2016/.
