Community donates more than £3,000 towards Grenfell Tower fire victims

On 4th October, the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Jean Crossby, Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington and local Councillor Trish Fivey, attended the Sutton Central Masjid in Sutton to receive generous cheques totalling over £3,000 from the local Muslim community for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The monies were raised by members of the Shah Jalal Islamic Foundation Sutton, who were joined in the effort by the Muslim Cultural and Welfare Association of Sutton and the Epsom and Ewell Islamic Society.

These donations, along with others, are still critical for the victims three months after the tragedy, with 80% of former residents of Grenfell Tower not yet permanently rehoused.

Tom Brake MP said:

“The tragedy at Grenfell Tower is one of the darkest episodes in our city’s history. It is in such difficult times that Londoners show their strength and generosity. We are incredibly thankful to these local Islamic institutions and all the local residents who contributed.  We know that this money will make a significant difference.”
