Fantastic range of “Local Treasurers Unlocked” Sept 17/18

Open House London is the capital’s largest annual festival of architecture and design, and running from the 17th – 18th September 2016. Sutton’s theme will be ‘Local Treasures Unlocked’ and we’ll have a range of venues open to the public, with some new additions and plenty of activities for all the family.

As well as many unusual buildings being open on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September, there will be  a number of special events, all of which are listed below

All Saints Carshalton

BedZED

The UK’s first large-scale mixed use eco-village and sustainable community. Completed in 2002, BedZED is still an inspiration for low carbon neighbourhoods that promotes One Planet Living across the world, developed in partnership with Peabody Trust and Bioregional. Carshalton House

Large late 17C house with interiors dated c1700-1800. Guided tour through the landscape grounds will take the visitor into the entrance Colonnade, Oak Room, Painted Room, Library, Entrance Hall and Staircase Hall. Entry: ground floor only.

Carshalton Water Tower and Historic Gardens

Early 18C Grade II listed building incorporating plunge bath with Delft tiles, orangery, saloon and pump chamber with part-restored water wheel. Hermitage and sham bridge in grounds. Entry: orangery, saloon, bathroom, pump chamber, roof. Quiz sheets for children.

 Honeywood Museum
Honeywood Walk, Carshalton SM5 3NX

Sat/Sun 10am-5pm. Last entry 4.45pm.

Chalk and flint house dating to 17C with many later additions including major extensions of 1896 and 1903 when owned by John Pattinson Kirk, a London merchant. Rich in period detail and the interior recently restored and back stairs opened up with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Now the London Borough of Sutton’s museum.

Treat yourself to an Edwardian High Tea at Honeywood’s tea rooms.

Throughout the weekend there will be children’s “Make an Edwardian High Tea” papercraft. Plus Honeywood Window Trail for children.

Sunday 18th 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm Tours of Honeywood looking at the 17th century and later building led by local historian John Phillips. No pre-booking required. FREE.

Nonsuch Gallery and Service Wing at Nonsuch Mansion
Nonsuch Park, Ewell Road, Cheam SM3 8AP

Georgian mansion, designed in Tudor Gothic style, later used at Windsor Castle. Built for wealthy merchant Samuel Farmer. Restored Service Wing includes dairy, kitchen, scullery, larders and laundries, loose-box. Gallery has timeline and first ever model of Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace, scale drawings, archaeological dig artifacts, and restoration of Georgian mansion stained glass. Jeffrey Wyatt 1806.

Russettings
25 Worcester Road, Sutton SM2 6PR

Sunday 18 September.  10-12:30

Russettings is a late Victorian House built in 1899. Designed by Frederick Wheeler whose other surviving buildings include St Paul’s Cathedral. Many original features can be seen such as the kitchen range, fumidors, panelled ceilings and attractive cornice friezes.

Since 1965 the building has been home to the register office for births, deaths and marriages.

St Mary’s Church
Church Rd, Wallington SM6 7NJ

Sunday 18th 1-4pm

A church on this site was recorded as far back as the time of the Doomsday survey. The current Grade II* listed building dates from the 14th century, with extensive restoration and additions undertaken during the Victorian period. The church contains fine Arts and Crafts decoration including an organ screen by William Morris & Co. The Carew Chapel contains tombs and memorials to the Carew family dating from 1520 onwards. The Chancel has 15th century misericord choir stalls and 15th century brasses in the Chancel floor.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

Carew Manor Dovecote
Beddington Park, Church Rd, SM6 7NN

Sunday 18th 11am-3pm

The octagonal brick dovecote was rebuilt by the First Baronet, Sir Nicholas Carew between 1707 and 1720 is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It originally contained about 1360 nesting boxes built into the inner face of the wall. In the centre is the potence, the rotating ladder used to raid the nesting boxes.

Sutton Police Station

A Grade II listed building built in 1908, this is an unusually elaborate example of a Metropolitan Police station built in a suburban area where a more domestic composition could be adopted. A modern extension was added in 2003. Attractions will include police horses and police dogs, traffic police car and bike, vintage police vehicles, tours to the cells and CCTV control room as well as public information stands. Entry: yard, Custody, Control Room.

Multi-purpose community building awarded BREEAM Excellent for its use of sustainable energy. Key features include a unique learning facility for children aged 10-13, library, eco-garden, sports pitch and climbing wall. Curl La Tourelle Architects/Elliott Wood Partnership 2010.
