Inspirational music director receives MBE from Prince Charles

Sahana Gero, founder and artistic director of World Heart Beat Music Academy, has had her dedication, inspiration and talent for music teaching recognised in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.  She was presented with her MBE for Services to Music and the Community in South London by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 7th December.

Ms. Gero has been teaching music and inspiring over 1,000 children and their families since she founded World Heart Beat in 2000.   She comments: “This is such an important milestone for World Heart Beat and for music, arts and culture in Wandsworth and in London.  World Heart Beat is committed to ensuring that our live music offer is nurtured, developed and enjoyed by all within the community.  Our focus continues to be on identifying new talent and finding new audiences through our collaborations and presenting music in fresh ways.”

A Unique Community Concept

World Heart Beat Music Academy helps talented young musicians reach their potential and enrich their lives. Whatever their background, young people are taught and inspired by the best musicians – with no financial constraints.  For all of them, this would otherwise be an impossible dream.  As one student puts it: “At World Heart Beat we have music – we have somewhere to go.  People without it have nothing to do and nowhere to go, so they just spend their time on the streets.”

Performances are in high demand and invariably sold out. In fact, the iconic Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club has recently signed up as a partner and famous Club 606 is a sponsor. World-renowned artist Emeli Sande, who also received her MBE on the same day as Sahana Gero, said: “If there’d been a place like World Heart Beat when I was a kid, I’d have been breaking down the door to get in!”
