Sutton second XV rout table-toppers

rugby-4Sutton & Epsom 42-3 Dorking
Sutton & Epsom hosted top of the table Dorking on the back of two impressive wins. The fact that they ended the afternoon with not only a bonus point victory but also crossing the line seven times whilst not conceding a try speaks volumes about the magnitude of their success.

Sutton opened with the slope in their favour. From the outset the pack was dominant with the front row trio of Madadangoma, Williams and Mroz putting their counterparts under considerable pressure. A penalty from the visitors was the only blot on the landscape for the Black & Whites who needlessly argued with the referee on more than one occasion. Debutant Stefan Cooksammy opened the scoring weaving his way to the line with tacklers hanging off him. Stefan Cooksammy, in combination with fellow Birmingham University alumnus Pete Matthews, gave his opposite number a torrid afternoon. Harry Jones added the extras. The remainder of the half was frustrating for S&E who encamped on the visitors line. For all their territorial dominance a penalty try appeared scant reward as the sides turned around with the Black & Whites 14-3 to the good.

Any fears that an 11-point lead would be insufficient to compensate for the slope were blown asunder. The 2nd XV put their opponents to the sword with an additional five tries. To be fair to the Dorking XV a series of injuries meant that by the end they were reduced to 13 players. That being said the attacking play with the combination of backs and forwards was spectacular at times. The Rugby Lane team also had the benefit of a strong bench introducing James Kinsella in the front row, Frankie Murray orchestrating affairs from 9 and James Matthews adding to the potency of the backs.

James Cooke had an impressive debut scoring two tries to add to his marauding performance in the back row. Messrs Kinsella, White and Burton also crossed the whitewash. This was the best performance of the season forwards and backs interchanged as well-timed offloads to supporting runners created chances that produced wonderful tries. The third of the trio of debutants, Dan Wood, had an impressive game as this all-action flanker tackled relentlessly combining with Sam Cooke and Ed Burton in a formidable back row unit.

This 42-3 triumph will be very satisfying for the whole squad. The team can go forward with great confidence having comprehensively beaten a team with an impressive four wins from five starts. Despite several significant absentees through injury the squad depth with impressive first appearances from the new boys meant that the winning run continues for the Black & Whites. Finally, a special mention to Phillip Williams who on Friday evening starring in the Vets 75-19 triumph over Esher, then having played for the seconds then started for the Development XV in another victory. Not bad three games and three wins in under 24 hours!
