Vote for Age UK Sutton in Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative

Age UK Sutton is asking people to help them bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative by voting for the charity in Tesco stores in Sutton throughout November and December.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – being awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive a cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Age UK Sutton is one of the groups on the shortlist. CEO of Age UK Sutton, Nicola Upton, spoke about the impact the funds would have on the charity, saying:

“As a small, independent charity, we raise our own funds for services that help and support older people in Sutton to live well and enjoy later life. Our popular Internet and computer classes give older people in our community the chance to experience first-hand how getting online and using a computer can change their life.

Something as simple as learning to browse the web can open a whole new world to an older person- allowing them to access information, rediscover hobbies, explore interests, meet new people, stay in touch with family and friends, and connect with their community among other benefits.

Winning the top prize will help us make lessons more accessible in the community, so more older people will gain the skills and confidence to conquer the digital jungle.”

Voting opens on 1 November at seven Tesco stores in Sutton (Brighton Road, Malden Road Express, North Cheam Express, Angel Hill, Cheam Extra, Lower Road Express and Wallington).Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the checkout in store each time they shop, and it is not necessary to purchase a carrier bag to vote. Online customers can also vote by taking their Customer Delivery Note into one of the seven participating Sutton stores to receive a token. Voting closes on 31 December.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £36 million to nearly 8,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for November and December. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”
