Work starts on major Beddington park project

At the end of the month dredging works will begin on the lake and stock pond in Beddington Park.

On Monday 18th the weir will be lowered, in stages, to allow the water levels to drop to ground level. This will be a gradual process over the next 2 weeks.

Silt mats have been laid in the concrete channel from the tilting weir to its confluence with the river downstream. These act to catch silt and prevent it moving along the river.

From today the contractors will begin erecting safety fencing around the lake and stock pond. This will take a few days to complete. By the end of the week the path way both sides of the lake will be closed, as well as the green bridge, and will remain closed for up to 3 weeks. We apologise for any inconvenience this necessary closure may cause.

As the water levels drop the fish will be rescued and either released further downstream or re-homed. Waterfowl will naturally relocate to areas where water remains.

The dredging process will, of course, cause some mess and disruption. Aside from the pathway closures there will also be a fenced off vehicle route to allow the movement of silt to drying locations elsewhere in the park. Expect to see large excavators in the lake and stock pond areas. The river will be dammed where it enters the lake and diverted, via flume, down to the weir.

There will be other works starting this month also, including pathway and entrance improvements.
