Carshalton College will host the annual London Borough of Sutton Young People’s Careers Fair on Wednesday 3 February. During the fair Sutton Council’s Education Business Partnership and partner organisations will provide essential impartial advice and information about getting into employment, education and training.

The fair is for young people aged between 15-24 and who are looking to make their next steps in the world of work. They will be able to learn about current vacancies and different pathways, find out how they can apply for apprenticeship programmes, and get help writing an effective CV.

Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of the Housing, Economy & Business Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“We’re committed to giving young people in the borough all the opportunities we can to help them get on the job ladder and making sure they have the best possible chances in life. From advice on writing CVs to interview techniques, the event aims to show our youth that the future is what they make of it.

“The LBS Careers Fair not only gives young people the tools they need to succeed in the job market, it’s also a great chance for employers to come and meet some of our talented young people in Sutton.”

Previous careers fairs have resulted in some real positive stories of young job-seekers being given an opportunity to succeed. In 2015, Chelsea Hersey started a trial role at Sutton-based Champion Timber.

Chelsea Hersey said:

“I attended the careers fair at Carshalton College and met the Champion Timber team. They explained what roles they had at their branches and it sounded like a great company to work for.

“Since joining them, I have worked at their New Malden and Sutton branches and have progressed from Yard Sales into a Trainee Desk Sales role. I enjoy the variety of the work, the customers I meet, working in the team environment, the salary, and coming into work every day.”

The careers fair is also a fantastic chance for local employers to identify and meet talented local young people and find out more about what they can offer as employees.

Stephanie Boughtflower, HR Manager at Champion Timber, said:

“During the day Chelsea enquired as to whether we had any opportunities that would enable her to get into employment within our organisation but was concerned as she didn’t have any relevant work experience. We were all very impressed with Chelsea and her can-do attitude, and offered her a trial position at New Malden Branch.

“Chelsea was an instant success and is an asset to her colleagues. In less than a year Chelsea has been successful in obtaining a promotion to our Sutton branch as a trainee Desk Sales Assistant.”

The LBS Careers Fair takes place on Wednesday 3 February at the Pulse Centre, Carshalton College, Carshalton and runs from 1.30pm through to 5.30pm. For more information please contact Chris Jones or the team at Sutton Education Business Partnership on 020 8770 6962.
