If anybody had wanted to come to Beddington Park and watching batting of county standard, then Saturday was the day to do it. Those who were there were treated to a stand of 176 by Leicestershire’s Michael Burgess, who scored 98 recently against Sri Lanka and former Worcestershire player Richard Oliver both of whom made centuries.

Even the most ardent Beddington Supporters thoroughly enjoyed this fine display of boatmanship. This all happened after opener Scriven had to retire hurt after taking a blow on the hand from Ryan Cummins which resulted in the inevitable break. Wickets were hard to come by, although, for the most part, Beddington bowled steadily and should not be discouraged as they will not come up against batting of this quality every week. A final total of 338 – 4 was always going to be a huge ask for Beddington.

The Beddington innings did not start well with Sam Owen and Dave White both going cheaply. But Anthony Down and Simon Lewis did what they could to steady the ship with a stand of 52 before Lewis, looking set once again, was out to the left arm spin of Luke Beaven who also removed Down and Moolman reducing Beddington to 77-5.

But then it w) as Beddington’s turn to produce a standard not without a fair amount of quality. Tom Bevan (68) has not been in great form of late but today he found his timing and was hitting the ball sweetly to all corners of the ground. Graham Lester (71) continued his recent good form with another patient but stroke-filled innings and these two added 124 before Lester was to Delmont and the score was 201-6. Beddington battled on through to reach the 225 required for a 4th batting point but were all out for 229 with just one ball left of their fifty overs.

Beddington are away next Saturday against local rivals Sutton. There is now a break from the 50 overs format as we go into the ‘time ’ games. Last year Beddington beat Sutton at home and but for that dreaded helicopter delay, would almost certainly have won the away game too.
