cuddington-brooklands-2Year Two pupils at Cuddington Croft School in Cheam are being encouraged to reach for the skies after an aviation-themed trip to Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.

The site, which was home to the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit, and hosts the Mercedes Benz World attraction, also has a rich flying heritage, which was the reason for the group of 60 students visiting as part of their ‘Flying High’ learning project.

The youngsters had a chance to look at and inside a variety of different planes and other forms of transport, including buses from World War One, and even got to see Concorde. Later in the day, they tried their luck as aviation detectives, searching the museum to find out information about the crafts they had seen, as well as having a go at being plane designers themselves, making paper gliders.

“Brooklands is a fascinating place to visit and somewhere that really caught the imagination of the children,” said Year Two teacher Natasha Lobo, who took charge of the trip. “It’s the sort of museum that many of them would love to visit anyway for their own interest, so to have a school trip there was great as it meant they were so enthusiastic right from the outset”.

The outing was just the latest field trip of what has proved to be a busy term so far at Cuddington Croft, a member of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust. Other trips have seen students visit London Museum, the Science Museum and the Hindleap Warren residential centre.

“We had a great day out at Brooklands and I know the children took away a lot of happy memories from their visit,” added Ms Lobo, “and not just memories, but knowledge too, which we’ll put to good use in the classroom with our follow up lessons. It was an educational and enjoyable day out, and definitely worth the trip.”
