Young & Co Brewery_Detail_Enhanced (1)Mapping the Mills is an exciting new project being delivered by the Building Exploratory in partnership with Living Wandle Landscape Partnership Scheme (LWLPS). The project will explore the fascinating industrial heritage of the River Wandle in South London, uncovering the history and locations of the 90+ water mills and industrial buildings that once powered the factories producing corn, paper, gunpowder, copper, dyes, snuff, leather, calico and silk.

Working closely with the Wandle Industrial Museum, the project will collate, share and celebrate the history of the area with local communities and visitors. A series of heritage walks will be developed along with a map and an
online guide.

The project is looking for volunteers to research and document the mills and industrial buildings and help develop the heritage walks based on the information gathered. Volunteers will help document sites of mills and industrial buildings (both existing and former) by visiting the locations and carrying out archival and desk research to write short descriptions of their historic and architectural significance – including changes in use (what they produced and how this changed over time), mill/building owners and associated people, and related stories.

To express your interest in volunteering on the project, please email a completed “Expression of Interest” form and a copy of your CV if you have one to: mail@buildingexploratory.org.uk
