Beddington fails to beat Banstead following poor batting performance

Beddington v. Banstead at Beddington on Saturday 19th August 2017

Beddington 140 (Down 33, Vyas 31, Lancefield 4-36) 50 overs

Banstead      143-7 (Lancefield 54, van Den Bergh 37)   32.2 overs

Banstead won by 7 wickets

In this their last home match of the 2017 season, Beddington were unable to achieve the heroics of the earlier encounter with Banstead. On a difficult wicket, Beddington’s brittle batting once again let them down and it was only the 42 runs added by the last two wickets that enabled them to have just a little something to bowl at after the interval.

Fawad Bajwa and Antony Down started confidently until Bajwa got a good one from Fisher and was bowled – much the bowler’s somewhat over-embellished joy. But it was the Banstead spinners who really got the better of the Beddington batsmen and wickets fell steadily. With the score 98-8, Parth Vyas and Jack Rogerson did their best to repair some of the damage. They ran, often scurriedly, between the wickets causing a fair amount of angst among the Banstead fielders. Rogerson even managed a surprising reverse-sweep in his innings of 18 not out, Vyas played nicely all around the wicket for his 31 but when he was out, it was left to Dan Lewis to support Rogerson for the few deliveries remaining.

Banstead were not going to make the same mistake as they did last time when Ryan Cummins (8-46) completely routed them. Aware that Cummins was restricted to only ten overs, they were nothing like as gung-ho in their approach. Tom Lancefield and Dan Newton started cautiously and it was Tom Bevan who had Newton strangled down the leg side and well caught by Parth Vyas. Lancefield was joined by Freddy van den Bergh and once Cummins came out of the attack these two took full advantage of the inconsistent length of the Beddington spinners and the score rattled along. Their partnership was 66 before Lancefield (54) nicked-off to Vyas behind the stumps off Seb Chmielinski. It was Chmielinski who also had van den Bergh (37) caught by Antony Down in the slips before Banstead delivered the final rites.

Beddington are away to Camberley next Saturday and to Leatherhead for their final league game of the season the following week.
