A bowling club from Carshalton have donated £2,200 to the dementia focused ward at St Helier Hospital.

The Shopland Select bowlers have named the St Helier League of Friends as their nominated charity for the year, meaning that the generous donation went straight to the charity’s special cause, Ward C2 – an area of the hospital specially adapted to provide care to people living with dementia.

Lead nurse for St Helier’s Older Persons Assessment and Liaison Service, Debi Miller, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to bowlers across the region who donated to the Shopland Select fundraising efforts – this generous donation will make a real difference to the patients we care for, as we’ll be putting it towards the cost of creating a sensory room on the ward.”

Sensory rooms can help to improve communication and memory, as the focus on sight, sound and touch helps to enhance feelings of comfort and well-being, relieving stress and pain.

Val Brundle, Chairman of the League of Friends, said: “We are really proud of Ward C2 – its unique design and committed staff are an absolute asset to the hospital, and truly make a difference to patients and their loved ones.

“From touches like the calming colours of nature throughout the ward to the new digital aquarium, the team have created a unique space for people living with dementia. We are absolutely delighted to be able to support the ward and would like to thank Shopland Select for lending their support to this wonderful cause.”
