Carshalton’s College students finalising work for Art Diploma

Carshalton College’s UAL Diploma Level 3 Art and Design students are busy finalising their final projects as the academic year is in its final term.

The diploma is a practical work related alternative to A Levels and leads onto higher education courses and entry level jobs in the Art and Design industry. During the course, students learn a variety of methods with projects in Photoshop, photography, life drawing, painting, illustration, print making and textiles.

Spending the time experimenting, students produced life drawings in charcoal, water paintings, create illustrations which are then blown up onto screen prints, sketch designs, photograph ideas and produce textiles. All the time they are exploring expression, symbolism and decoration through art.

For the second year students, their final major project takes 10 weeks and uses their preferred method to create a final piece of artwork. Their development process is shown in their sketch books, explaining the different themes and backgrounds they have explored, research and development, different art methods used before deciding on what to use for the final piece.

All artwork will be displayed at the Art & Design End of Year Show, taking place at the College from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday 15 June.

This year, the first years have based a project on the theme of Zoos and visited London Zoo in April for inspiration. SILC, Skills & Integrated Learning Centre, in Mitcham approached the College looking for students to design a mural for their building which has being created using acrylic paints. Students have also been working with the music technology department to design album covers for the students, they have created a mural for the College’s on-site nursery and will be working with Supported Learning students to create thank you cards.
