Century partnership helps Beddington after shocking start

Beddington v. Sutton on Saturday 6th August 2016
Beddington 199 (R Cummins 56, G.Lester 54, S.Chmielinski 40)
Sutton 202-7 (Harinath 79)
Sutton won by 3 wickets.

Anyone watching this game would have felt that they had got their money’s worth as it swayed first one way and then the other.

Beddington started disastrously losing their top 5 batsmen with only 26 on the board. But the rot stopped there. As Graham Lester and Ryan Cummins set about repairing the damage, it was Lester who was the main aggressor while Cummins played mainly a supporting role. But as their confidence grew, Cummins too started to attack. After a stand of 107 Lester was LBW to Harry Allen but the runs continued to flow. Seb Chmielinski had joined Cummins and he too decided that attack was the best means of defence. These two put on a further 34 before Cummins, not for the first time this season, was run out. Chmielinski continued to take the attack to Sutton with a huge 6 over long-on and by now Beddington had managed to reach a very respectable 199 after their shocking start,

The Sutton innings was in complete contrast to Beddington’s. Although Mike Nicol could barely get bat on ball against Cummins early on, somehow he survived. He and Surrey’s Arun Harinath put on 74 for the first wicket before Nicol was brilliantly caught in the slips by Anthony Down. Runs continued to come easily and it looked odds-on that an easy victory was coming Sutton’s way. But with the score on 147 Sutton lost Harry Allen and soon afterwards the return to the attack of Ryan Cummins saw the departures of Harinath (79) and Douthwaite (0). And meanwhile too Arun Butler had had Kelvin Smith stomped for 8. So 147-1 had become 175-6 and Beddington were very much in the game. But it was the experienced Gary Outram who put Sutton back on the right track. Although Beddington claimed another scalp, it was not until the score had reached 198 and it was Outram’s 27 not out which took Sutton over the line.
