Greenshaw Learning Trust welcomes conclusion from Lib Dems about Rosehill Recreation Ground and new secondary school

greenshaw-learning-trustThe Greenshaw Learning Trust has welcomed the statement by Sutton Liberal Democrats that they have concluded that Rosehill Recreation Ground in Sutton is the only option for locating the second new secondary school that the Borough needs.

Projections show that the Borough will need two new secondary schools in the coming years. Sutton Council is already working on plans for a new secondary school on land at the old Sutton Hospital site in Belmont, and as part of the process of preparing for and consulting on the new Local Plan, has been evaluating possible sites for a second school. It is now expected that the Council’s Housing, Economy & Business Committee in December will allocate the Rosehill site for a second secondary school in the draft Local Plan.

The Greenshaw Learning Trust has approval from the Government’s Department for Education (DfE) to open a new 8 form entry comprehensive secondary school with sixth form in Sutton, along with a base for secondary age children on the autistic spectrum. The Trust has previously stated that the Rosehill site offers the best available site in the Borough for the school.

The school’s students would benefit from close cooperation with the adjacent Sports Village and make use of the recreation ground, that would continue to be open to the public. The school can be built with minimal impact on the open parkland; the bowls club, community centre and children’s play area will remain unchanged with their current access and usage.

The Greenshaw Learning Trust will now be working with the DfE’s Education Funding Agency (EFA) and Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), operators of the Sports Village, to bring forward proposals to establish their new secondary school at Rosehill Rec.

The proposals will be dependent on planning permission being granted and the necessary agreements being concluded between the Trust, the EFA, GLL and Sutton Council. Residents, recreation ground and sports village users and other interested groups will be informed and consulted throughout the process.
