After Friday’s heavy rain, Beddington lost the toss and were quickly put in to bat. Wickets fell quickly due mostly to to poor shot selection or a bit of bad of luck. After the early dismissal of Dave White’ Simon Lewis’s dismissal was still a bit of a mystery later in the day! and just before lunch Antony Down got one that popped a bit and he lobbed a simple catch to point. So at lunch Beddington were 83-4. Not long after, Kyle Moolman tried to leave a ball from Younas but could not get his bat out of the way quickly enough and played onto his wicket. From thereon in the wickets fell far too often and 109-8, it looked as if the game could be over by tea-time. Only the tediously slow over-rate could drag it out much longer. But Hamid Gondal and Jack Rogerson had other ideas and slowly but surely they started to create a total that might even be defendable. Their skipper had asked them to try to get to 130/140 but not content with having achieved this, they took the score to 175 before Rogerson was bowled for a gutsy 25. Gondal then, in partnership with Dan Lewis, put on 27 more for the final wicket with Gondal (53) becoming far more aggressive. Forty-five minutes earlier, a total of 202 looked out of the question.

  1. Whits had 54 overs to overtake the Beddington total but started, it turned out, as they intended to carry on – monotonously slowly – rather like their over rate. At tea they had lost no wickets but soon after, Ryan Cummins struck to bowl Shah for 15. In the next over, Dan Lewis had Mumtaz LBW for 16. Then in the next over, Cummins bowled Murtagh for 0. This put O.Whits precariously at 34-3. A tiring Cummins was soon replaced by Seb Chmielinski who beat the bat on a number of occasions without any luck. Rana and Raza put on 106 for the 4th fourth wicket before both were out in more or less exactly the same manner. First Raza tried to slog-sweep Chmielinski and skied it high in the air to mid-wicket where Jack Rogerson ran around from mid-on and took a wonderful steepling catch. In Chmielinski next over, Rana did exactly the same with the same result. Chmielinski had further success when Clarke was snapped up beautifully in the slips by Antony Down and with the score on 146-6, Beddington were smelling victory. Cummins returned to the attack after some loose bowling from the two Beddington spinners who perhaps let the O. Whits’ tail off lightly. Chmielinski (4-35) did take a take a 7th wicket but by now the O.Whits had secured the winning draw and soon after, the final over was bowled.

This was a slightly more dogged performance by Beddington who go to Walton next week hoping for their 2nd second victory of the season.

The Beddington 2nd X1 won by 5 wickets at O. Whits with Stephen Mann taking a hatrick.
