Sutton Common Rovers win 2 – 4 on penalties.

Sutton Common Rovers Reserves turned in an excellent performance to see off a very strong Cranleigh side from the Surrey County Intermediate League (West) division to progress into the next round of the county cup, writes Gary Brigden

With us having a very young side, once again four of Mark’s U17 side were involved, with Finlay Carney and Ali Mallah in the starting line up and Alfie Elsey and Mason Seagroatt on the bench, it was always going to be a tough ask to progress.

We have been lacking in the physical department of the game, but working on this in training, and experience gained from matches against Battersea Ironsides and Worcester Park to name but two was to stand us in good stead, as this once again was a tough physical encounter.

In spells we played some outstanding football, with Michael Debrah and Carney both going close in the early stages, but both times the woodwork came to Cranleigh’s rescue. We continued to hold the upper hand, and a decent Donny Reid free kick saw the Cranleigh keeper pull off a very good save.

We were not having it all our own way though, and found ourselves under some heavy pressure as the game progressed, and we were thankful to a Man of the Match performance between the sticks by Cosmos Cupid to keep them at bay.

We made a couple of changes on the hour to try and change things up, Kieran McLeary came off to be replaced by the more defensive minded Humphrey Agho, and young Seagroatt came on for Abu Mansaray. The changes almost paid dividends, with the quick feet and tenacity of Seagroatt causing problems for the Cranleigh back line, but despite some decent link up play with Carney and Debrah we were unable to find a breakthrough and the game finished goalless.

So level and straight into penalties. Whatever happened next, the boys did themselves proud today and it would come down to the lottery of spot kicks.
