September is Urology Awareness Month hoping to banish stigma

September is Urology Awareness Month. Now in its third year, the campaign is dedicated to all things urological, from increasing knowledge about urology disease to banishing the stigma associated with many of these conditions.

Urological conditions include some of the most common serious diseases in the UK – such as prostate cancer, kidney damage and incontinence. Other diseases include bladder cancer, testicular cancer, kidney stones, interstitial cystitis, and urinary tract infections.

Half of people in the UK will develop a urological condition in their lifetime, and over a third of people don’t know what urology is. Therefore, campaign organiser The Urology Foundation (TUF) is urging healthcare professionals and residents in Sutton to join the awareness-raising effort.

It’s important that people understand how to look after their urological health as well as the signs and symptoms of urology disease so they can seek help earlier.

NHS Choices is a good place to find expert information before consulting your GP with any concerns.

Signs and symptoms to look out for include:

  • Going for a pee more often than usual
  • Blood in your urine
  • Less control when you need to pee (incontinence)
  • Pain when you pee

To help raise vital funds to invest in research, specialist professional training and education, TUF is encouraging people in Sutton, and all over the UK, to undertake a sponsored ‘feat on their feet’ by covering their own choice of distance during September. Their aim is to collectively cover 5,317 miles – one mile for every person diagnosed with a urological cancer each month in the UK.

More information about this campaign – known as the 5,317 Challenge – is available from TUF online, where you can also learn more about the signs and symptoms of urology disease.

Residents or healthcare professionals with experience of a urology disease can also share their stories with TUF by phone, 020 7713 9538, or email.
