Sutton New Town Festival of Remembrance – will include exhibition of those featured in unique War Memorial Chapel

You are warmly invited to attend the Sutton New Town Festival of Remembrance to be held at 3 pm on 10th November 2018 at St Barnabas Church (SM1 4NS).The festival will consist of a mix of songs, poetry, music, and stories to remember individuals.

It will include material provided by a local historian, Fiona Carey, and her team of volunteers who have been researching the biographies of the men from Sutton New Town who were killed in the Great War.  The festival will culminate in a short act of remembrance and a communal commitment to work for peace.

The Phoenix Concert Band will provide the music and the Reverend Charles Cotton will lead the Act of Remembrance at which wreaths will be laid within the Memorial Chapel by Major Christopher Goodwin, Representative Deputy Lieutenant, the Mayor of Sutton, Cllr Steve Cook, Mr Tom Brake MP and councillors representing Sutton Central & Carshalton Central Wards.

The War Memorial Chapel in St Barnabas is unique within the Borough and is dedicated to the over 150 men from the Sutton New Town neighbourhood that died in the Great War. It is also home to the borough’s Civil Defence Memorial Window commemorating the men and women who served in Sutton during the Second World War.  The standard of the old Sutton Branch of the Royal British Legion is lodged in the sanctuary of the War Memorial Chapel.

The Chapel is participating in the iconic national art installation There But Not There as part of the Centenary Commemoration of the end of the Great War.

The festival will start promptly at 3 pm and will finish by 4 pm followed by a short reception within the Exhibition that will tell the stories of the 146 men commemorated on the walls of the Memorial Chapel.

We ask all guests to have taken their seats by 2:45.

There will be a retiring collection taken as people leave the Festival.  The money raised will be divided equally between the British Legion and the War Memorial Chapel Repair Fund.
