Residents who have parking permits are being urged to comment on proposed changes which will take place in September. The proposed changes to the residents parking schemes in Sutton will now link charges to emissions categories.

“A resident within the parking zone who does not have the luxury of off-street parking will find themselves paying a charge to the Council on the basis of their a vehicle’s emissions class; whilst at the same time a resident living in the same road with a similar vehicle and who is in every other way in similar circumstances, but does have off street parking, will not pay the charge,” said a resident.
“A resident living within the parking zone who owns a car for occasional use but normally walks into Sutton and/or cycles or uses public transport for shopping, school, work etc, will be paying the same ‘CO2 emissions charge’ as a similar resident who choses to drive their car a lot more rather than walk or use public transport, although they will be causing far less CO2 emissions.
“A resident living in Central Sutton without off-street parking will pay the ‘CO2 emissions charge’ to have a car parked near their house, and may leave that car standing still and not producing any emissions, whilst a resident from elsewhere who drives a high polluting car through Sutton town centre every day will not pay anything.
