Training organisation to offer construction courses in the borough

constructionSutton Council has welcomed Sutton and District Training’s decision to provide construction training courses for young people and adults in the borough.

Twenty adult learners aged 19 and over have signed up for the first part-time training course in construction multi-skills, which focuses on skills needed by local contractors. The students are learning painting, decorating and carpentry skills in the 16-week course, which runs two days a week in the former Building Lives Training Academy at Rosehill Court on St Helier Avenue.

Sutton and District Training is working with partners including the council, Sutton Housing Partnership and local employers to develop training and employment opportunities for both young people and adults.

Andrew Taylor, Chief Executive of Sutton Housing Partnership, said:

“At SHP we have always sought to promote training that will enable our residents to gain employment and address local skill shortages. We are therefore pleased to partner with Sutton and District Training and wish them every success as they develop their construction training programmes.”

Sutton and District Training is holding an open day at Units 5-6 Rosehill Court, St Helier Avenue, Sutton SM4 6JS on Thursday 19 October from 10.30 to 11.30am to raise awareness of the construction training opportunities available to adults and young people in the borough.

Vik Seenayah, Business Consultant at Sutton District Training, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Sutton Council and Sutton Housing Partnership to provide construction training to help meet the skills demands of local construction employers. Providing a flexible training programme to meet the needs of local employers means that we can provide a workforce with the particular skills needed and of which there are a shortage at present.

“When they qualify the learners will have their CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card and be ready to work on borough building sites. So it’s a win-win all round.”
