Comprehensive overview of borough’s mental health services

Healthwatch Sutton has produced a comprehensive overview of mental health services available to residents in the borough. 

Adult services

Statutory services Primary Care

Sutton Uplift is an integrated Primary Care Mental Health service accessible to anyone living in the borough of Sutton or registered with a Sutton GP who are 18 years and over.

Sutton Uplift is a partnership between the NHS (SWl and SG Mental Health Trust) and local voluntary sector organisations and launched on the 1st of July 2015 as part of a programme of “Improving Access to Psychological Services” (IAPT)

Uplift is a free (NHS) service for anyone in Sutton experiencing difficulties and symptoms related to stress, anxiety and depression

The service provides support to anyone who has a mental health or wellbeing need, whether this is due to emotional difficulties or life stressors. They also offer a service for people with a stable mental health diagnosis such as psychosis and Bipolar Affective Disorder

“With values based on empowerment and building resilience within the community we tailor support to the individual. The service has four key elements: The Referral Centre, Recovery Team, IAPT (Improving access to Psychological therapies) and Wellbeing.”

Based at Jubilee Health Centre East in Wallington with some services in community locations around Sutton.

Operates a single point of access for all referrals for services offered by Sutton Uplift and those requiring assessment for secondary mental health services.

Referrals either

  • Professionals working with or supporting people, including GPs
  • Self referrals (online referral form or telephone)

Process

  • aims to focus on individual and tailor support to  individual needs.
  • Initial conversation to identify needs and any services that will help

 

Supports wellbeing needs and mental health in a number of ways :

  1. Self management courses
  2. Psychological therapies
  3. Psychiatric assessments
  4. Recovery and Wellbeing support

 

Self management courses

  • A range of wellbeing and IAPT courses  addressing specific needs
  • Aim to teach strategies and techniques
  • Includes living well with a long terms health condition, CBT for unemployment, managing low mood/depression, self confidence workshops

 

Psychological therapies( individuals and couples)

  • Includes bereavement counselling, mindfulness, counselling and psychotherapy
  • Time limited sessions providing support for;

Eating disorders (Anorexia – initial assessment only)

Health anxiety – believe they may have a serious physical illness which their doctor has not been able to identify or diagnose.

Low mood/depression

Obsessions/compulsions

Panic Attacks – Prior to clients being recommended for psychological therapy, panic disorder needs to be medically investigated by the person’s GP. This is to rule out any physical health conditions that could be causing the physical symptoms associated with the panic attacks.

Psychiatric assessments

  • Provides a service for people requiring assessment of their mental health needs
  • The Assessment Team are based within the referral centre and are staffed by community psychiatric nurses and a consultant psychiatrist.
  • The Assessment Team offer psychiatric assessments over the telephone and face to face, leading on assessments where urgent risks are associated. The Assessment Team work with other providers and specialist mental health services.

Following an assessment, a holistic and appropriate package of support is suggested and suitable onward referrals made. Assessment may result in referral to hospital based services in the community offering different levels of care and support

 

Recovery and Wellbeing support

Wellbeing is core to the service with Wellbeing Navigators working in collaboration with all elements within Sutton Uplift.

The Wellbeing Service

  • Support to help people to connect and access activities and resources to meet their physical, social and emotional needs.
  • Aims to support people cope in the present and be able to help themselves in the future. This maybe through building on existing strengths, developing new skills or social relationships.

Primary Care Recovery Team

  • The Primary Care Recovery Team (PCRT) has been set up to support those who have a severe and enduring mental health problem, such as psychotic disorders or bipolar disorder  and whose condition is stable and will benefit from a recovery approach to care.
  • The PCRT aims to bridge the gap between discharge from hospital care  during a period of transition towards more independence.
  • The PCRT also has a role to play in offering early identification and intervention to prevent deterioration of those already within GP surgeries. By supporting people early, the PCRT aim to prevent service users needing more intensive interventions.
  • Experienced Mental Health Professionals including Nurses, a Psychiatrist and Wellbeing Navigator will work together to ensure that people with a long standing mental health condition recieve greater support in the community

 

  • In Sutton – Carshalton and Wallington and Sutton and Cheam Recovery Support Team (18 – 75 with sever and enduring mental health problems)

Statutory services –  Secondary Care

Provided by South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust

Provides a service for people with serious mental illness eg psychosis, bi polar, depression and sever disorders

An extensive range of secondary services

Including;

 

  • inpatient services based at Springfield hospital with condition specific wards for 5 London boroughs (12 – 18 year olds, Acute, some single sex, anorexia, deaf, perinatal, older people etc) CQC rating good, June 2018

 

  • Sutton Home Treatment Team (HTT) offers both an alternative to admission and facilitates early discharge. Also offers crisis intervention.
  • Sutton Drug and Alcohol Recovery team (DART) works in partnership with Community Drug Services for South London to deliver a range of drug and alcohol recovery services across the London Borough of Sutton.
  • Sutton Older People Community Mental Health Team -over 75, anxiety, depression, psychosis, memory assessment service for people with suspected dementia
  • Recovery College – a range of courses for anyone having recent need for services and family friends and carers

Provides a drop in service at its base in Downs Road, Belmont

Independent charity providing a self-help group that provides support to people suffering from anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. Holds weekly meetings
