Construction course students work on community build for Haig Housing Trust

Since November, over fifty of Merton College students on various Construction courses and students on the Electrical Installation course have been on an industry placement with United Living.

These students studying Level 2 and 3 have been receiving hands-on experience at Rhodes Moorhouse Court in Morden, working on the development of 68 new homes for the ex-service community on behalf of Haig Housing Trust.

As part of the placement, our students are gaining valuable knowledge and skills in Plumbing, Carpentry, Drylining, Bricklaying and Plastering.  For our Level 1 students, they have been undertaking site visits and attending presentations on the construction industry lead by the site management team of the Rhodes Moorhouse Court project, as part of the work placement.  The work placement has been beneficial to both United Living and our students.

Farhan Mohamed, Senior Site Manager at United Living said “Being able to provide young people who are pursuing a career in construction work placements with us is an absolute pleasure. Encouraging the next generation is vital to the continued growth of the industry and our team is happy to share our knowledge and experience.”

Nathan Williams, who is studying Bricklaying has been inspired by the work placement, “My experiences on this site were amazing. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and I have learnt loads of new skills and I hope to come back.”

The support and encouragement being offered will give students a better insight into the construction industry and will help them in their course and boost future career prospects.
