Cricket match to return after two years to raise money for cancer charity

Two years after a charity cricket tournament raised over £34,000, Cricket Balls to Cancer is set to return to Send this summer.

The event was first organised in 2017 by Jessica Bryan in memory of her husband Charlie Young, who sadly died of testicular cancer at the age of just 34. An avid cricket fan, Charlie conceived the event before he died with the aim of putting on a great family day out with food, drink, fundraising and of course a spot of cricket in the sunshine.

The event will raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which supports the work of The Royal Marsden in Sutton where Charlie was treated for over three years, and Royal Trinity Hospice in London where he died in May 2016.

This year’s event will again be held at Sendholme Cricket Club, Send on Saturday 18 May and is open to all, not just those who knew Charlie. It promises to be a great day out with family and friends centred around a private cricket pitch in the beautiful Surrey countryside.

The cricket tournament will begin at 11am as teams of six compete for the Forever Young trophy. There will be family-friendly fun and games, face painting and a bouncy castle as well as food and a bar throughout the day and a raffle and silent auction.

Organiser Jessica Bryan said: “Charlie loved cricket, so we could think of no better way of raising awareness and money than this special six-a-side tournament.

“Cricket Balls to Cancer is set to be a great family day out in the sunshine and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone along and raising funds for two charities that do fantastic work and helped to support Charlie when it mattered the most.”

Phil Cuthell, Fundraiser, Royal Trinity Hospice said: “We’re delighted that Cricket Balls to Cancer is returning this year and will again raise funds for Trinity and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

“We are inspired by the support and dedication of Jessica and her team and so grateful that the funds raised will help us continue to provide expert care to those who need us, free of charge.”

Lydia Clark, Senior Community Fundraising Manager, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, said: “Thank you so much to Jessica and everyone involved in organising Cricket Balls to Cancer and raising money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity once again. It is thanks to our charity supporters that The Royal Marsden can continue to deliver ground breaking treatment and care for people with cancer. The money raised will not only benefit patients of The Royal Marsden but those with cancer across the UK, and around the world.”
