Help to spring clean the borough

Residents, school children and teachers across the borough are being encouraged to take part in this year’s Great British Spring Clean. The national litter-picking event will take place 28 May – 13 June 2021.

Last year, more than half a million people signed up for the Great British Spring Clean, which had to be delayed until September because of lockdown. The events of the last 12 months have highlighted more than ever the importance of our green spaces in keeping our minds and bodies healthy. So organisers, Keep Britain Tidy, are hopeful that this year’s national event will be bigger and better than ever.

Getting involved is easy: You can choose to litter pick as an individual or as part of a Covid-secure group of up to six people or two households (guidance on how to organise a Covid secure litter picking event is available). There are bespoke resources including ‘Revolting Review’ sheets, ‘Litter Bingo’ cards and ‘Thank you’ certificates for schools who want to get involved.

Just make sure you register how many hours you or your group pledge to spend litter picking on the Keep Britain Tidy website. They will convert all pledges into miles – the target is for 1 million miles of litter picking to take place this year!

Once you’ve made your litter-picking pledge, you can approach Sutton Council for local support. We may be able to supply things like:

  • Litter pickers
  • Gloves
  • Great British Spring Clean-branded waste sacks.

Working with our street cleaning partner Veolia and parks maintenance partner idverde, we can also arrange for full waste sacks to be collected from a pre-arranged collection point following your clean-up.

Full details on the Great British Spring Clean 2021, how to make your pledge and how to approach us for local support, can all be found at www.sutton.gov.uk/GBSpringClean.
